Oongan Dam, a Haunted Place in East Denpasar

Oongan Dam is a favorite tourist object for Balinese people in the 1980s. Every holiday such as Galungan, Kuningan, Ngembak Geni, New Year and other holidays, the dam area is visited by sea of people. Therefore, this tourist object was once equipped with water attraction such as swimming pool.
Unfortunately, the object located at Oongan village, East Denpasar subdistrict retains an unresolved mystery until these days. Many people are missing and sank to die there. Causes of the accidents are unclear so that the swimming pool was then transformed into an elite housing complex.
Local community as well as other people believes if the Oongan Dam is relatively haunted. The location is believed to be inhabited by supernatural creatures such as gamang, memedi and others. On that account, no one will dare do bad deed or contaminate the place. If violating it, the guardian creatures of the Oongan Dam will get angry and not hesitate to harm.
Chief of Oongan customary village, I Nyoman Meja, said the Oongan Dam had long been known to be haunted. Many mysterious incidents happened at the location. Once there was a visitor taking a bath delightfully. For no reason, the man then plunged himself into the river in a long time. His friends were confused because the man did not appear. “Such an incident often occurred. Even, a man getting absorbed in fishing was suddenly reported to have died because of drowning,” he said.
According to him, there was also a myth where people were not allowed to be dating there. Violating the myth would make their relationship not last long. Many local residents told that a male motorist once stopped to urinate arbitrary on the spot. On the following day, he went back and put a canang oblation containing a candy because he was disturbed by a dream if he was visited by a guardian of the dam.
Nyoman Meja added that it was formerly a tourist object visited by many local tourists. Even, many passing motorists stopped to take photos. In contrast to the present, the object was rarely visited by the public since the pool around the dam was buried and fenced. Then, people only passed it through.
To preserve and honor the guardian at the location, explained Meja, on holy days such as full moon, new moon and kajeng Kliwon, the villagers of Oongan put canang sari oblation. It was intended to give tribute to invisible residents of the Oongan Dam. Similarly, people also held a piodalan or temple anniversary in the Bugbuban Temple located on the east of the Oongan Dam every full moon of the fourth month in Balinese calendar (around October),” he added.
