Festival of India in Indonesia

Stages Mahanayak Garuda to Deepen Fraternity

Festival of India in IndonesiaStrains of music with typical rhythm begin to be heard. Steps of the dancers are in tune with the sound of jingling bracelets. Sometimes they heave tenderly and slowly but also stomp very strongly. The movements seem interesting because they are accompanied with the sound of drums. The costumes do not only serve as decoration, but also as a property that is often played by the dancer.
It is the presentation of the Indian dance in the Festival of India in Indonesia, which was held at Taman Ayun tourist attraction, Mengwi village, Badung County, Monday (May 4). The presentation was performed by reliable dancers and musicians from Sangeet Natak Academy, National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama, New Delhi.
Festival of India this time featured the Mahanayak Garuda Dance, where in Bali it is similar with Wayang Wong or human puppet. Garuda can be identified with eagle, its golden body described as a strong man. It has white face, red wings and sturdy beak with a crown on the head.
Its movements were based on three Chhau dance styles depicting the eagle as a protagonist. The dance emphasizes on the body movements such as the movements of martial arts. However, the audience cannot see the facial expressions of the dancers as wearing mask. The audience can only see the inspiration of the movements. It is taken from the great Mahabharata and Ramayana epics.
Indian Consul General Amarjeet Singh Takhi said that the performance of Indian dance in relation to this festival is supported by the government of Badung. Garuda Mahanayak Dance is an organization of Indian culture which has been recognized by the UNESCO. “This Mahanayak Garuda Dance is intentionally presented at Taman Ayun because both are already recognized by the UNESCO,” he said.
“So far, the people of Bali and Indonesia can only see Indian culture through TV shows, but now we can look more closely. Hopefully, it can deepen the intimacy between the youth of India and Bali and Indonesia in general,” said Amarjeet Singh Takhi.
Regional Secretary of Badung, Kompyang R. Swandika, said that it is a very positive activity that aims to strengthen relationship, friendship and brotherhood among the people of India and Indonesia. The Indian art is very popular in Bali such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana epic. “This activity is meant to enrich our art. And the Taman Ayun is chosen because it is a World Heritage being similar with the dance staged,” he said.www.bali-travelnews.com
