Wow ... Banyu Pinaruh Ritual at Tanah Lot Lasts Solemnly

One day after the Saraswati Day, Sunday (May 3), it is turn for Balinese Hindus to make self-purificatory rite for the body and soul by taking a bath together on the beach, lake or river. This process is very exciting and amazing because the entire beach in Bali including Tanah Lot Beach, especially the Batu Mejan Beach, is thronged by many people.
Alongside of coast, people gather while sitting around and some of them take a bath. This procession is started from early morning until day time and it is one of the interesting events that we need to see when visiting Tanah Lot. Banyu Pinaruh is one of Balinese cultural processions aimed to purify the body and soul from poor influence.


This celebration is conducted by Hindu residents at Tanah Lot in particular at the morning time. It is commonly performed on the beach, lake or river. According to Balinese belief, by taking a bath which is better known as Banyu Pinaruh people will be able to refresh the body and eliminate the sultry feeling from regular activity.
Banyu Pinaruh is held every six months (210 days) in Balinese calendar and it is executed one day after Saraswati Day. Banyu Pinaruh is one of the events entangling all societal elements from children to old people and it is one of the events that tourist can see during their holidays in Bali.
Tanah Lot is regularly visited by many Hindu people on the Banyu Pinaruh. On regular days, catching fish becomes a daily routine for local fishermen. However, on that day, hundreds of people seem to perform Banyu Pinaruh ritual. The activity takes place from early morning up to the night on the black sandy beach of Tanah Lot Beach.
